Welcome to the Fifth Ward
Mosaic Mural at School named in honor of late Congressman Mickey Leland

Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men

Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men is a boys' secondary school in the Fifth Ward opened in 2011 in the former E.O. Smith Education Center campus. The HISD magnet school is named after George Thomas "Mickey" Leland (November 27, 1944 – August 7, 1989), a civil rights leader, advocate for poor people, TSU graduate, and local politician who served in the Texas House of Representatives and as a Congressman in Washington, representing Texas Congressional District 18. Leland perished in 1989 in an airplane crash in Africa. The current U.S. Representative for District 18 is Sheila Jackson Lee. The federal building on the Southwestern edge of Downtown Houston right next to the Gulf Freeway (I-45) is also named for Leland. --> Mickey Leland Federal Building at 1919 Smith Street Houston, TX 77002 (renovation).
